Euro 2012 – Poland & Ukraine

Posted on July 31st, 2008 by in Euro 2012

There has been some whispers going around that the German Soccer Federation has been in discussions with UEFA regarding Germany co-hosting Euro 2012.

Whilst Poland is rebuilding and erecting new stadiums there are doubts that ex-Soviet Ukraine will be able to take on the task of staging half the tournament which is a bit of a shame…

John Cleese in his first commercial for Bank Zachodni WBK, a second commercial is currently being filmed in Warsaw.

The ad was also aired in all news programmes in Poland after representatives from a small town near Krakow complained when it was referenced in the advert, when Cleese claims that he “has an aunt from Pcim”, and therefore is eligible for one of the bank’s credit accounts. The local council in Pcim quickly changed its mind about the commercial when it realised that here was a perfect vehicle to get the town noticed and was, in fact, great publicity.

Gdynia – Sea Towers

Posted on July 30th, 2008 by in Polish Buildings

When completed, the new “Sea Towers” high-rise complex overlooking the Gulf of Danzig will have an overall height of 138 metres. The building consists of two connected towers with 28 and 36 floors respectively. Situated directly on the harbour front as well as being centrally located, the structure will eventually provide around 32,000 square metres of inner-city residential, office and retail space – with a very impressive view of Danzig and the surrounding area.

The Sea Towers consist of two joined towers, the higher tower, together with its antenna mast, will reach a height of 138 metres. Its top floor will be taken up by a viewing terrace for residents and their guests.

The three lower storeys are destined for technical utility rooms and parking spaces, as well as a separate part for services, trade and recreation. Elegant offices, situated on the Bay side, will have their own internal access.

Above the commercial zone, comfortable residential apartments have been designed to have magnificent views and optimum sunlight. The highest storeys of both towers will be taken up by luxurious penthouses with a panoramic view of Gdansk Bay.

Date of Completion
28.02.2009

There are a few reasons why I picked Gorzow as the first city profile. I used to live there and it’s widely known as one of the most depressing places in Poland. High unemployment, Communist blocks, skinheads and a feature on a TV program called “The Worlds Worst Gangs”.

Gorzow

To be honest it got a bit of a hard deal in that program, the gangs are either the drunken supporters of the local football team Stilon Gorzow or Nazi loving skinheads with no jobs or prospects who spend most of the time in bars talking about how they hate black people when in all likelihood they’ve never met any (I saw one none white person in 6 months whilst living there).
Where to stay in Gorzow

The Qubus Hotel in Gorzow is the only one worth staying at, it’s 4* and quite pricey for the city, it has English speaking staff, a great breakfast and the rooms aren’t too bad.

What to do in Gorzow

Some areas have been modernised in recent times including the new “Askana” shopping centre and the Slowianka swimming pool complex (better than most western pools). Askana has numerous coffee shops, a modern cinema and the usual clothes shops with odd western names like “Gin & Tonic” and “Sunset Suits”.

There are not many tourist attractions and it’s not a place many people choose to visit, if you are in the area it’s worth checking out some of the small tourist villages nearby like Lubniewice or Lagow a bit further away.

Gorzow Nightlife

It was quite surreal on my first trip to a Gorzow “Discotheque”, Guys try their hardest to look like Eminem and girls try their hardest to look like Paris Hilton. I turned up in chinos, a button down shirt and loafers… I must have looked like a King.

People go out quite late and the clubs don’t fill up until after 12, bottles of vodka can be purchased with a jug of mixer for around $40.00, getting a few of those is the easiest way to make friends with the locals. I always had a great time at the clubs in Gorzow as the people are friendly, drinks are cheap, the music is loud and the girls are beautiful.
